【和歌山】【新】高野山の宿坊に宿泊‼︎お坊さんのお勤め体験

Hello, this is Taka from ZIPANG55. This time I would like to introduce how I stayed at a temple in Mt. Koya. In the previous video, we introduced the Koyasan sightseeing spot. If you haven’t watched the video yet, please check the summary section for details.

This channel introduces the charms of Japan with a focus on hotels. If you want to know the best travel information, please subscribe to our channel. I’d like to head over there right away. Koyasan is located in the northern part of Wakayama Prefecture, about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Osaka Station.

This is Seijoshinin, where we will be staying this time. This is a temple with a history of over 1000 years. This is a temple near the entrance to Okunoin, which I introduced last time. This restaurant also focuses on vegetarian cuisine.

Shojin ryori is a type of cuisine prepared based on Buddhist precepts with the aim of avoiding killing living things and stimulating earthly desires. Wild vegetables and beans are mainly used. Seijoshin-in is supervised by Ajikichicho, a Japanese restaurant that received one star in the Michelin Guide in 2022.

They serve vegetarian cuisine using vegetables from the foothills of Mt. Koya. I’m looking forward to it. There was a nice sofa in the waiting area of the temple. You can check into your room from 3pm. You can leave your luggage with us even before check-in, which is helpful.

The person in charge carefully guided us around the building. You can freely participate in the morning shift from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. I was shown to the room where I would stay. This time, I made a reservation for the entire building.

It seems like you can stay in the building next door, but we seem to be the only guests. I want to go inside right away. The inside looked like an old Japanese house. When I thought of a temple, I imagined a room without much furniture, but it’s no different from a regular inn.

There was a futon spread out in the next room. It looks warm. There were also yukatas, towels, and toothbrushes. There were three rooms, but they had no particular purpose. Looks like it can accommodate a large number of people. I used one room for luggage storage.

The wash basin is also clean. I’m glad that the water area is clean. There was also a hair dryer. The bathroom was also large and had a bathtub. The bathtub is also surprisingly spacious, so it seems like two people can use it at the same time. The shower is also working properly.

Shampoo and body soap were also available. The toilets are also clean. There were two washbasins in addition to the one mentioned earlier. It’s convenient when getting ready in the morning. There was one stove in each room, which was helpful. There’s also a TV. There was also hot water in the pot.

I was happy that they also had tea and sweets available. The tea sweets were from the locally famous “Mirokuishi”. It had just the right amount of sweetness and was delicious with tea. We also received a tree that is used in a ceremony called “Gomagyo.”

Write your wishes on the tree and place it on the fire while praying. I would like to participate later. The room descriptions and breakfast times are written in English, so it’s easy to understand. Chairs are also provided so you can look out.

When I heard that it was a temple, I thought it was old, but it was newer than I expected. It may be beautiful because it is a plan to rent the whole building.

The price is 14,500 yen per person for a whole building rental plan, including one night and two meals on Saturdays and Sundays. There are two types of rooms: a wall-separated plan and a whole building rental plan. You can stay in a wall-separated room for a cheaper price.

Unfortunately, there is no wi-fi. Please be careful when traveling from overseas. Seishin-in Temple also offers free temple tours. I would like to participate right away. There are many places to stay in the main hall of the temple.

Tours are held three times a day. Apparently you can participate even if you are not a hotel guest. It is said to be Kukai painted during the Muromachi period (1336-1568). Kukai is also known as Kobo Daishi.

This is Kobo Daishi, painted during the Edo period (1603-1868). The style of painting is a little different. This is said to contain offerings to the gods. It seems that the temples in Mt. Koya are managed on a rotating basis every year.

It seems that people of different social status walked in different places in the hallways. When a fire broke out, the fire was extinguished by knocking over a bucket of water installed on the roof. It is said that the ceilings were specially designed in areas where people of high status sat.

A statue of Kukai is kept here. It is said that Kukai still meditates at Okunoin. It is said that he put a lot of thought into the statue of himself he had made the day before he entered Okunoin. You can only see the statue on April 20th.

There were imperial tablets of Uesugi Kenshin and the Akita family, who were active during the Sengoku period (1467-1590). There was also an imperial tablet of Natsume Soseki, a famous Japanese novelist from the Meiji period (1868-1912). This is a garden created with the image of a river flowing through it.

We were also introduced to the kitchen that was used in the past. It’s a big pot. Although it is a temple, the god of fire, not Buddha, is enshrined on the side of the kamado. Next, I would like to participate in a prayer called “Gomagyo”.

We light a fire while chanting sutras. Place a tree with a wish written on it. The ceremony ended with a prayer and a message from the monk. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to participate, so if you’re interested, please stop by. I returned to my room.

It was a valuable time to be able to tour the temple and experience Goma-gyo. I would like to eat dinner now. Dinner is the vegetarian cuisine I introduced earlier. I thought I would be eating in a large hall, but I was able to eat in a private room.

The room was too large for two people to eat together. There was a stove and it was warm. This is today’s dish. Everything looks delicious. Basically, vegetables and wild plants are the main ingredients. It also came with rice. It was quite cold, so it was nice to have hot food.

Overall, it had a lot of flavor and was delicious. I was surprised because I thought it would be bland. I think it’s a taste that was supervised by a Michelin-starred restaurant. There is no meat or fish, so those who want to eat a lot may feel a little unsatisfied.

I visited in early March, but it was still cold. Those visiting in winter should be careful. After eating dinner, I would like to take the night tour of Okunoin that I introduced in the previous video. This is Ekoin, where the night tour starts.

It’s 2 minutes from Seishin-in Temple where I’m staying, so it’s close. A monk will guide you around Okunoin with commentary. You can participate even if you are not a hotel guest. It is 3,500 yen if you apply on the day, and 3,150 yen if you apply in advance.

There seems to be an English tour as well. I will post the details in the summary section, so please check it out if you are interested. The monk explains. It seems that there is no mountain called Mt. Koya. The name of this area is called Mt. Koya.

There are currently 117 temples, and you can stay overnight at 51 of them. It is said that there were over 2,000 temples during the Edo period (1603-1868). It is said that anyone who believes in Kukai can be buried at Okunoin, regardless of their sect or social status.

There are also many graves of members of other sects. This is a tomb called “Gorinto”. It represents five things. From bottom to top, they represent earth, water, fire, wind, and sky. Buddhism believes that the universe is made up of these five substances. Approximately 20 participants will walk together.

This is a slope called “Kakubanzaka”. It is said that if you fall on the way, you will die within three years. Eventually, we were guided to the mausoleum where Kukai continued his meditation and chanted sutras. Please join this tour as it will help you understand the charm of Mt. Koya.

Next, I will participate in the morning work. It is held at the main hall from 6:30 in the morning. It’s still cold so you need a jacket. Read the sutra for an hour. Basically, there is no problem for participants as long as they sit on a chair.

Lastly, there was a story about a monk. There is also a stove, but please be careful as it gets quite cold. Then I would like to go have breakfast. Breakfast is also Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, mainly consisting of wild vegetables and beans.

There is also a cancer imitation. It is a dish made by mashed tofu, mixed with lotus root and burdock, and fried. This comes with rice and miso soup. The taste was very delicious. Personally, I wish there was a little more quantity. For those who eat less, this may be just the right amount.

If you are interested in vegetarian cuisine, please give it a try. So what did you think of this video? I was able to have experiences that I wouldn’t normally have, such as staying at a temple and participating in training. Why not try it out at least once?

It will encourage me to make videos, so I would be happy if you could subscribe to the channel and give it a high rating. Thank you for watching until the end. See you again in the next video. Goodbye~
