🍣🦀Kyoto Food Tour🍩☕Japan Travel Guide 🍓🍰

Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital, is renowned for its well-preserved heritage, stunning temples, and beautiful gardens. In this video, we will dive into its vibrant food scene. This footage is from multiple trips over the past two years, capturing Kyoto in spring, summer, and autumn. We hope you enjoy experiencing the different seasons of Kyoto as much as we do. If you like this video, please don’t forget to like, comment, share and subscribe to this channel. Arashiyama is a gorgeous district on Kyoto’s western outskirts. The Bamboo Grove is the most iconic site here. Just outside the entrance of the Bamboo Grove is Saga Toufu Ine, a place that serves a delicious and healthy vegetarian meal for about 2,000 yen. We visit every time we come to Arashiyama. Next to the famous Togetsukyo Bridge is the popular Arabica Coffee. There’s always a huge lineup, but it’s worth it – the coffee tastes really good. Maybe the soft water is better here, and the scenery is impeccable. Kyoto Station is huge. We love staying at the hotel inside the station for its convenience. The hotel buffet is fantastic, with different themes every month. Today, it’s sushi, featuring fishes from the south. They even bring in sushi chefs! Of course, I need to try all their desserts. Dinner costs 6,900 yen, members get a 10% discount. Under the train station is Porta Dining with 50 restaurants. It’s a perfect spot to grab a quick bite before sightseeing. Inoda Coffee is a classic Kyoto coffee shop beloved by locals. It’s been serving the city since 1947. Opposite Inoda Coffee is Maimon Sushi, a conveyor belt sushi chain from Kanazawa. The sushi is excellent, especially the sea perch (nodoguro), a Kanazawa specialty. We had a feast for just 8,200 yen for the both of us! Ippudo Ramen, our favorite ramen chain, is directly across. Three of our favourite shops in one corner. In July, the Gion Festival is held in Kyoto downtown. Honnō-ji is famous as the site of Oda Nobunaga the most powerful warlord’s assassination in 1582. On Teramachi Street, there is the famous Mishima Tei, a sukiyaki restaurant serving high-quality Japanese black beef since 1873. The restaurant also sells their famous aged beef. Koé Donuts is beautifully designed and offers a wide variety of options to choose from. We’ll definitely be coming back to try more! Nishiki Market, known as Kyoto’s kitchen, has a rich 400-year history. Aji sai is a hole in the wall unagi restaurant located above an eel shop. The eel here is even better than Hitsumabushi we loved in Osaka and Tokyo. They use eel liver in their broth. What a hidden gem! Steamed fish cake in the market. A Happy Pancake is located right next to the Nishiki Market The wait time can be long an hour is normal, and 2-3 hours during busy tourist seasons, The soufflé pancakes with fresh fruits are delicious . After attending the Gion Festival, we came upon a Korean Yakiniku restaurant that serves Kyoto beef. The cold noodles were very refreshing in the summer heat. Pontocho – Kiyamachi is Kyoto’s dining district, dotted with restaurants and bars. We visited Yamafuku, which serves shabu shabu using dried flying fish and soy milk as a stock base. The tender alkaline ramen was the best part of the meal. Kiyamachi is lined with beautiful willow and sakura trees. We headed to Tousuiro, a tofu cuisine restaurant offering riverside dining with a balcony overlooking the Kamo River. Tofu cuisine is a famous specialty in Kyoto as the city is known for its soft water, which is essential for delicious tofu. Nama-fu (chewy glutenous rice cake) was my favorite. The cold tofu was refilled constantly. The cool breeze from the river is the best form of air conditioning. All dishes are prepared with seasonal ingredients and take into consideration the customer’s appetite in the midst of summer. The meal is a brief version of the traditional Kaiseki, providing a glimpse of the traditional dining experience. A short walk from Kiyomizudera Temple, there’s an immensely popular Starbucks in a traditional Japanese machiya (wooden townhouse) on Ninenzaka. Expect a long wait time due to its popularity. The teahouse of a 300-year-old traditional confectionery shop. At the end of a long day, we settled in a crab restaurant just across from Yasaka Shrine. The crab was huge, and the beef was also good we even ordered an extra plate of beef. The total came to about 10,000 yen per person. Hidden in a small street further south in Gion is a casual kappo counter restaurant. Kappo is a multi-course omakase meal. Kappo means ‘to cut and to cook,’ a less formal cuisine emphasizing interaction between the diner and the chef. After five appetizers, a sea bass soup with melon was served. Conger eel sashimi was served two ways: lightly boiled and seared with plum sauce. The textures are perfect. One is soft and the other one perfectly tender. We originally thought it was meat underneath the sea urchin. The chef’s signature dish was glutinous rice steamed once and cooled, hiding fish inside, then poured with broth, similar to ochazuke. The entire fish, including the bone and head, is consumed. Each dish deeply delights the taste buds, maximizing the flavor of the ingredients without overdoing it. The chef is a master at bringing out each ingredient’s flavor, perfectly exemplifying the essence of Kyoto cooking. We will list the website of each restaurants and eateries in the description below.
