It is located within Tianmen Mountain National Park in Zhangjiajie, in the northwestern part of Hunan Province. The mountain has a unique geographical location and magnificent natural scenery.
The mountain belongs to the Wuling Mountains. It is a karst landform with steep cliffs and lush forests. The mountain has a large altitude difference, with the highest altitude reaching 1,518.6 meters. The terrain is complex, with various karst landforms such as exposed stone buds, karst valleys, and vertical karst caves.

Scenic Spots and Attractions

Tianmen Cave: One of the most famous attractions is Tianmen Cave. It is a natural arch that is a world-renowned wonder. The cave is about 131.5 meters high and is a result of long-term geological evolution. There are 999 steps leading to the cave, known as “the stairway to heaven,” which is a challenging yet fascinating climb for tourists.

Tianmen Mountain Cableway: Constructed in 2005 by the French company Poma, it is claimed in tourist publications as the “longest passenger cableway of high mountains in the world.” With 98 cars and a total length of 7,455 meters and an ascent of 1,279 meters, the cableway offers a breathtaking journey up the mountain, allowing tourists to enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding landscape during the 30-minute ride.

Cliff-hanging Walkway: Built along the edges of the mountain’s summits and clinging to the vertical cliffs, the walkway is about 1.6 kilometers long and around 1,400 meters high. Walking along this walkway gives visitors a thrilling and unforgettable experience as they overlook the deep valleys and magnificent mountains below.

Tianmenshan Temple: Located on the summit, the temple has a long history and rich cultural connotations. The original temple was built during the Tang Dynasty and was destroyed in the early 20th century. The rebuilt temple in 1949, with Tang Dynasty architecture style, now sits on landscaped grounds covering 2 hectares.

Rich Cultural Heritage

The mountain has a long history and rich cultural background. In ancient times, it was known as Yunmeng Mountain and Songliang Mountain. In 263 AD during the Three Kingdoms period, a natural wonder occurred when a cave suddenly opened in Songliang Mountain, and since then, it was named Tianmen Mountain.
It is also associated with various legends and cultural traditions, which add to its mysterious and alluring charm. These cultural elements have attracted many scholars, poets, and tourists over the years, making it a place not only of natural beauty but also of cultural significance.
