Shimonoseki (下関) and Mojiko (門司港), located on opposite sides of the Kanmon Strait (関門海峡), are two historic cities with deep cultural and historical significance. Shimonoseki is well known for its connection to the Battle of Dan-no-Ura (壇ノ浦) and its fugu (河豚) delicacies, which can be enjoyed at Karato Market (唐戸市場). Akama Shrine (赤間神宮) is another must-visit, paying tribute to the Genpei War and offering stunning views of the strait.

Just across the water, Mojiko offers a charming retro atmosphere, with the Mojiko Retro District (門司港レトロ) featuring restored buildings from the Meiji and Taisho periods. The Mojiko Station, one of the oldest in Japan, and the surrounding waterfront area provide a nostalgic look into Japan’s early modern era. Visitors can easily travel between Shimonoseki and Mojiko via the Kanmon Bridge or even walk through the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel.

Kokura (小倉), located just a short distance from Mojiko, is a dynamic city blending history and modern life. The highlight of Kokura is Kokura Castle (小倉城), a beautifully reconstructed castle surrounded by a lush park. Kokura also serves as a gateway to explore the wider Kitakyushu area, making it a convenient stop for travelers interested in both history and contemporary culture.
