Every year in mid-October, Koedo Kawagoe comes to life with its biggest event of the year, the Kawagoe Festival. At this time of year, as autumn deepens, red and white curtains are hung in the city center, and you can hear the practice of festival music from nowhere, as everyone looks forward to this historic festival that has been going on for about 370 years. This major event that Kawagoe is proud of and involves the participation of its citizens has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, and in 2016 it was registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
The magnificent competition of festival music and dance, called “Hikkawase,” takes place when the floats meet. When the festival heats up, it unfolds at a fast tempo, and the atmosphere of the festival reaches its climax with the spirited shouts of the young men. It is the festival’s greatest attraction.
