JAPAN Exploring Shimane’s Hidden Gems | Tsuwano, Tsuchida, Yuno Onsen & Hamada Beach Road Trip

Japan Camper Van roadtrip throughout Shimane.

Tsuwano
Known as “Little Kyoto,” Tsuwano is a charming historical town in Shimane Prefecture, famous for its well-preserved samurai residences and traditional architecture. The town dates back to the 14th century and flourished under the rule of the Kamei clan during the Edo period. Tsuwano is also home to the Tsuwano Castle ruins, perched on a hill overlooking the town, and the Taikodani Inari Shrine, one of Japan’s top five Inari shrines, adorned with over 1,000 red torii gates. The town is also renowned for its picturesque canals filled with colorful koi fish.

Tsuchida
Tsuchida is a lesser-known rural area in Shimane, offering a glimpse into traditional Japanese countryside life. It’s not as widely recognized as other destinations, but its charm lies in its peaceful agricultural landscape and small communities. Visitors can appreciate the rustic beauty, fields, and forests, where time seems to slow down, making it ideal for those seeking a quiet retreat.

Yuno Onsen
Yuno Onsen is a hidden gem in Shimane, offering relaxing hot springs in a serene environment. It is less commercial than other onsen areas, giving visitors a more intimate and traditional Japanese onsen experience. The waters are known for their therapeutic properties, believed to help with muscle pain and fatigue, making it a perfect stop for rejuvenation on a road trip. Many ryokan (Japanese inns) in the area offer onsen baths with stunning views of nature.

Hamada Beach
Hamada Beach, located on the Sea of Japan coastline, is one of the most popular beach destinations in Shimane. Its clear blue waters and fine sandy beaches make it a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying seaside activities during the warmer months. The beach is part of Hamada City, which has a long history as a port town and was a strategic location during Japan’s feudal period. Hamada also boasts beautiful sunsets and a laid-back coastal atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the inland areas.

This road trip offers a mix of history, culture, natural beauty, and relaxation across Shimane!

  1. That diner looked like just the kind of place I’d stop in at. Anyway, Shimane is on the travel list. 👍

  2. Thank you for this wonderful video! Shimane is our home prefecture 🙂 We love Tsuchida and it's great for swimming and snorkeling. The beaches are just so beautiful. Really enjoy the way you film and edit. Looking forward to the next one.
