One of its most poignant landmarks is Nagasaki Peace Park (平和公園), created in memory of the atomic bombing on August 9, 1945. The park’s Peace Statue (平和祈念像) symbolizes the city’s enduring hope for peace and serves as a powerful reminder of the effects of war.

Glover Garden (グラバー園), with its Western-style houses from the Meiji era, showcases the influence of foreign merchants who played a key role in Nagasaki’s growth. The garden offers beautiful views of Nagasaki Bay (長崎湾), making it a popular spot for history and photography lovers alike.

Oura Church (大浦天主堂), Japan’s oldest wooden Gothic-style Christian church and a UNESCO World Heritage site, represents the city’s Christian heritage, especially during the period of Christian persecution in Japan.

Meganebashi (眼鏡橋), or Spectacles Bridge, is the oldest stone arch bridge in Japan, built in 1634 over the Nakashima River (中島川). Its twin arches reflect in the water, resembling a pair of glasses, making it an iconic symbol of Nagasaki’s historical landscape. Visitors can also find heart-shaped stones along the bridge, adding a romantic touch to the scenic walk along the river.

Just off the coast of Nagasaki is Gunkanjima (軍艦島), or Battleship Island, an eerie yet fascinating relic of Japan’s industrial history. Once a bustling coal mining facility, the now-abandoned island’s crumbling structures stand as a haunting reminder of Japan’s rapid modernization. Tours to the island allow visitors to explore its abandoned ruins and learn about its significance in Japan’s industrial past.
