My second day in Tohoku began at Shiogama Shrine in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture. This shrine, the head shrine of approximately 110 Shiogama Shrines across Japan, boasts over 1200 years of history. It’s dedicated to Shiotsuchi-no-Okina, the guardian deity of the sea and salt. The shrine’s magnificent architecture, particularly the unique style of the main hall (Honden) and worship hall (Haiden), immediately impressed me with its rich cultural heritage. Spring cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and the “Shiogama Cherry,” designated a natural monument, was especially captivating in the sunlight.
After visiting the shrine, I headed to Urakasumi Sake Brewery, one of Japan’s renowned sake producers, with a history dating back to 1724. The rich aroma of rice greeted me upon entering. I joined a tour that explained the sake-making process, from rice selection to fermentation, each step revealing the brewers’ expertise and dedication. The highlight was the tasting, where I sampled three distinct Urakasumi sakes, each sip a delightful blend of nature and human craftsmanship.
Next, I explored the Shiogama Fish Market, a haven for fresh seafood loved by locals and tourists alike. I gathered an assortment of seafood to create my own “My Kaisen-don” (seafood rice bowl). My first taste of whale sashimi was a revelation – surprisingly delicious and tender. I also savored a steaming hot kaisen-don at the market, brimming with fresh sashimi, a true culinary delight.
I then visited Zuiganji Temple’s Godaido Hall and Entsuin Temple. Godaido Hall is known for its history and scenic beauty, while Entsuin attracts visitors with its statue of Enmusubi Kannon, the deity of matchmaking. Each temple offered a unique experience, immersing me in religious culture and providing a tranquil space for reflection.
Continuing my journey, I visited Matsushima Rikyu (Imperial Villa) and Motsuji Temple in Iwate Prefecture. Matsushima Rikyu, one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views, boasts stunning surroundings. Motsuji Temple is famed for its beautiful Japanese garden. I enjoyed cherry blossom viewing at both locations, embracing the vibrant energy of spring. Kitakami Tenshochi Park, another prime cherry blossom spot with approximately 10,000 cherry trees, was a dreamlike spectacle in full bloom.
Finally, I checked into a Hanamaki onsen resort and indulged in a lavish buffet dinner, followed by a relaxing soak in the hot springs.
